Ireland’s failure to qualify for the European Championships is one of the great disasters in our sporting history. The catastrophe is made even worse by being self-inflicted, entirely predictable and richly deserved.
Our women’s soccer team has been heading for a fall since the sacking of Vera Pauw after the World Cup finals. Maybe a loss of player faith in her methods really did coincide with FAI panic over anonymous American allegations. The problem was that the FAI turned a crisis into a disaster.
