Speak to people who have worked closely with Heimir Hallgrimsson and they will say that he is more emotional than his calm exterior may suggest.
It is known that Hallgrimsson was so downbeat after September’s scarring defeat in Yerevan that senior figures within the FAI were left with the impression that the Icelander might be ready to walk away. He was not immune to the sense of despondency that hung over a World Cup campaign that felt like it was over after two games.
