Ruben Amorim makes ‘crazy’ Roy Keane an offer – and Gary Neville wants to make it happen
2 min readRuben Amorim has made a positive first impression in his opening week as Manchester United manager and now he is eager to extend the hand of friendship to the club’s all-time greats.
A new era at United will start on Sunday, as Amorim takes charge of his first match against Ipswich at Portman Road and he is keen to hear the views of the club’s former manager Alex Ferguson and his long-time captain Roy Keane as he settles into his new role.
In an interview on Sky Sports, Amorim suggested he wants to have dinner with Keane in Manchester, with former United defender Gary Neville offering to set up the meeting.
“He was a player that I really liked,” said Amorim of Keane. “I know he’s a little bit crazy! But he was a massive player and I like players with character.
“It was not just what Roy Keane did on the pitch, it was the way he influenced the others. I think that is very important. You must have this kind of player in the big clubs and I hope we’ll have, in the future, players like Roy Keane.”
Neville then offered to set up the dinner with Keane, but it is safe to assume this date would not include his former manager Ferguson as the duo have not been on speaking terms for many years.
“But you cannot put this on the players. They told them they have five days off so they can fly anywhere. Nobody in the club said they cannot fly.
“They have to live their lives because they are grown men and they have to decide these things. Us as a club have to change in these standards.”
