On a cool night, the calmest heads prevailed. Instead of making history, Ireland became the hosts for it; hosts that were far too accommodating when it really mattered and will have to cope with the weight of those regrets.
There was a familiarity to the scenes at the full-time whistle, a small band of away fans and media giddy at the enormity of what they were witnessing as a celebrating team posed for pictures in a stadium that had rapidly emptied.
